Poem Title: “Who Are You”
I’m a Mandinka Warrior,
Kunta Knite,
Not Toby, descendant of Sundiata Keita.
I came to fulfill the legend of
my ancestors.
Even in the face of death,
I didn’t succumb to degradation,
For to live, is to die for a cause.
I’m the grandchild of Samory
Touré.
A man of fierce resistance,
Bravery, conquest and supremacy,
Never will I deny my root, identity,
And culture for anyone.
I’m a Donso,
A fierce traditional
hunter,
I had fought with beasts in the jungle,
Shed blood, and won battles.
The bruises are the symbols,
Of my heroic strikes.
I’m Mansa Kankan Musa,
The discoverer of America,
The wealthiest man in history,
And the pride of Black Civilization.
I hailed from Timbuktu.
